Atelier Ellis launches signature-coloured Stain collection to encourage maximum play with minimal but joyful materials.

This autumn, Atelier Ellis, makers of beautiful, breathable bio-based paint and materials releases its first collection of vital-hued Stains. Founder and colourist Cassandra Ellis has developed 32 colours to harmonise with, and enhance, the brand’s renowned en terré paint colours.

These Stains echo the material ethos that led the development of Atelier Ellis’s bio-based paints—the only independent paint maker to produce these in the UK using local, natural materials.

The beautiful, robust stains are formulated with natural materials including glass, wax and cellulose to create matt and deeply saturated, healthy colours. They can be used to bring all kinds of unfinished wood, stone, concrete and plaster finishes to life. The stain collection turns these materials into highly tactile and sensorial experiences, allowing wood grain and surface textures to shine through while creating deeply atmospheric environments.

“Now is the time to re-evaluate how we think about society and the future of construction and interiors,” suggests Cassandra Ellis, Founder of Atelier Ellis. “I’m always interested in a better way of living, and I wanted to create a simple, beautiful and practical solution for spaces and finishes where plastered walls aren’t practical or right. Staining wood surfaces is an honest and robust solution which is also aesthetically uplifting. We’re seeing more and more architects and designers reassessing materials and turning to humble but beautiful solutions including wood, ply, bamboo and hempcrete in finished surfaces and furniture. These stains can bring material joy to both domestic and commercial spaces.”

Atelier Ellis’s new Stains are designed to enhance and protect these materials, giving them unexpected depth and luminosity, offering the opportunity to explore their untapped potential in creating places and spaces with integrity and purpose. They can be used for both unfinished furniture or wood or to add rich colour in an architectural adventure.

Ellis believes it is a progressive, resourceful and responsible approach: “By maximising minimal materials, we can create extraordinary spaces that are a joy to be in and require less maintenance, with an ecologically sound outcome.”

The Colours

This new collection of 32 colours celebrates Atelier Ellis’s ongoing themes around art, people, landscape and food. These joyful, intense but muted hues have been developed to sit happily alongside the Atelier Ellis paint palette, making it easy for everyone to experiment with paint and stain combinations.

Colour highlights include Anna – our generous and warm-hearted red that is particularly perfect in eating environments. What’s Up Buttercup is a beautifully soft yellow that can only bring delight, and it demands to colour in an entire room. Katakana is the perfect ruddy violet whilst Sorbet serves up a delicious and juicy pink. Schjerfbeck is a saturated and artisanal black, whilst Big Sky leads us to the perfect English summer days. Every stain aligns with a variety of paint colours, ensuring maximum versatility and creativity.

Available in as 30ml samples at £5 each and 1L tins at £40 each. (RRP, including VAT).

The Atelier Ellis Stain collection launches on 6th October 2026 and is available to view and order online or at our London studio.
